Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s proposed spending plan this week includes $2.4 billion in new ongoing investments for special education and paid pregnancy leave for teachers \u2014 issues teachers have brought front and center in the face of high living costs and staff retention struggles.<\/p>\n

While education advocates said the plan released Thursday and known as the \u201cMay Revise\u201d is a significant improvement from Newsom\u2019s January proposal, they say the governor still owes schools money from the state\u2019s general fund.<\/p>\n

\u201cGov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s May Budget Revise contains welcome provisions that will benefit public schools,\u201d California School Board Association President Debra Schade said in a statement. But, she continued, \u201cthe administration\u2019s generosity in some areas is undercut by its inclusion of funding for one-time projects and one-size-fits-all mandates instead of investing those resources in base funding.\u201d<\/p>\n
