California\u2019s higher education officials say they are seeing a \u201ctroubling and sustained decline\u201d in completion rates of the California Dream Act Application (CADAA), a state-based program that provides financial assistance to immigrant students without permanent legal status and students from mixed-status families.<\/p>\n

The trend, said Niki Kangas, spokesperson for the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC), suggests \u201cthat undocumented students and mixed-status families are weighing if it\u2019s safe to apply for financial aid and go to college.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen students have to weigh their financial and educational futures against the safety of their families, we\u2019re facing a college access crisis that further deepens inequities for immigrant-origin families,\u201d she said during a May 7 news briefing.<\/p>\n
