A group of Pacifica surfers is proposing the construction of an artificial reef to mitigate the erosion left by powerful waves pounding the shore.<\/p>\n

The Bay Area city\u2019s fragile coast is battered by relentless waves for much of the year, one of the hardest-hit stretches being the iconic Beach Boulevard, just north of the city\u2019s pier. That city landmark cracked this month after decades of natural impacts \u2014 and is now closed indefinitely.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s high velocity water,\u201d said Bob Battalio, 67, a Pacifica-based surfer and civil engineer specializing in coastal hydraulics. \u201cThe waves land on roofs, blow out garage doors and knock people over. The city also closes the road fairly frequently in the winter because it\u2019s not safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
