A FIFA World Cup watch party in downtown San José ended in violence late Tuesday, with two people stabbed and several arrests amid a  police dispersal order.

A huge crowd had packed into San Pedro Square near the intersection of Santa Clara Street and Almaden Avenue to watch Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 and advance in the tournament.

It was the team’s first World Cup knockout-stage win in four decades, and tens of thousands turned out to celebrate.
